a change of his mind. so what happened? let's get right to peggy fox live in manassas. what's the deal, peg? >> reporter: well, mike, aaron thomas was expected to plead guilty to two rapes and three counts of abduction with intent to defile. those charges go back to halloween night of 2009 when three teenage girls who were out trick or treating were abducted and two of them were raped. but today in court when the judge asked aaron thomas how he pleaded for the first rape charge, here's what he said. i don't know which is right or which is wrong. i don't know what i'm doing. the commonwealth's attorney says he wasn't surprised that aaron thomas did not plead guilty because of his previous erratic behavior. >> i certainly would not want him to plead guilty if he had any question about whether he should or not. if i'm not convinced that he's willing and -- ready, willing and able to accept responsibility, i don't want him to plead guilty. >> reporter: aaron thomas who is 41 is known as the east coast rapist because police in maryland, virginia, connecticut, and rhode island have connected his

the latest. >> a very surprising turn of events here the prince william county courthouse in manassas as errant, as the man known as the east coast rapist backed out of a plea deal. he was expected to plead guilty to two cases of rape. from an incident on halloween of 2009 in dale city. but when he was asked how he pleaded, he said i do not know which way is right or not. i am not sure i know what i am doing. after that was dismissed, the reconvened to discuss a future court date. he has a plea hearing set for november 30 and loudoun county for a separate rate. --for a separate rape. his next court date hearing is in prince william county on january 14. after what happened here this morning it is impossible to know what is going to happen later this month. thomas's next court date set for january 13. in manassas, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. >> 12:15. a sign of progress in the aftermath of hurricane sandy they added the gas rationing. hard to forget these photos of lines spanning four blocks. rationing will continue though in new york city and on long island. new york city council will
